If so, you may want to get them screened not just for a learning disability like attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), but also <a href=\"https:\/\/sharphearingcenter.net\/hearing-loss\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss<\/a>. This is because the symptoms of the two conditions often mimic each other and because it\u2019s possible for a child to have both. Some symptoms of ADHD include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Difficulty following instructions<\/li><li>Missing details in their work<\/li><li>Trouble focusing when being spoken to<\/li><li>Avoiding tasks that require intense focus<\/li><li>Interrupting conversations or activities<\/li><li>Being easily distractible<\/li><li>Inability to follow directions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people struggle with these skills; however, a diagnosis of ADHD is only made if these symptoms severely impact a person\u2019s ability to function or their quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Hearing Loss in Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately one to three of every 1,000 babies is born with hearing loss in one or both ears, and as many of 15% of school-age children are estimated to have some degree of hearing loss. In school, symptoms of hearing loss may present as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Inattentiveness<\/li><li>Poor academic performance<\/li><li>Lack of responses or inappropriate responses<\/li><li>Difficulty with social interactions on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plano.gov\/1411\/Bob-Woodruff-Park-North\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Woodruff Park Playground<\/a><\/li><li>Acting out<\/li><li>Low self-esteem<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some other symptoms include turning up the TV too loud, trouble understanding speech in environments with lots of background noise, abnormal speech, not responding to their name, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Diagnosing ADHD &amp; Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, there are no physical tests that can definitively diagnose ADHD. Instead, it is diagnosed through observation of behavioral and psychological symptoms and by answering a series of questions. The process is somewhat subjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sharphearingcenter.net\/hearing-loss\/tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hearing tests<\/a> are much more straight-forward. Some don\u2019t even require active participation from the person being tested. Thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearingloss.org\/programs-events\/advocacy\/know-your-rights\/early-hearing-detection-intervention-act-ehdi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI)<\/a> that was rolled out nationwide in 2000, hearing loss tends to be diagnosed early in kids.
